This gorgeous coffee-table book gathers the work of 60 people in the field of landscape architecture, ranging from the some of the established, recognizable names and projects to some of the newest and most obscure. The selection process began with 30 of the more prominent architect who were each asked to choose one up-and-coming architect to contribute. Some of the masters included in the book are James Corner, who designed The High Line in New York City, and Andrew Grant, acclaimed for his work on Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. Emerging architects include Yi Kyu Choe, whose massive Overpeck County Park in New Jersey won’t be completed until 2024. Kombol’s descriptions of the architects and their work vary in their insights, from the profound to the mundane, but the focus on each artist includes nice little lists such as each architect’s favorite trees, favorite plants, and favorite contemporary artists. Kombol, a practicing landscape architect herself, gives equal due to finished projects and conceptual designs, but it is the photos of actual, completed spaces that truly captivate. 750 color illus. To demonstrate how urban public spaces around the world are being shaped, American landscape architect Kombol surveyed recent work by 30 eminent practitioners in the field. Each was asked to select a “forward-thinking” colleague to be included, resulting in profiles of 60 landscape architects and illustrations of selected projects. Many of the designs are impressive in scale, including major parks, shorelines, river valleys, and master plans for cities. Some are “brownfield” sites that required the cleanup of polluted land and water. Statements by the designers emphasize making connections among buildings, local environments, and people, a process that includes working with collaborators in many other fields. A quarter of the profile subjects are based in the United States, with the others representing 20 nations. American landscape creations include James Corner Field Operations’s High Line in New York City, Peter Walker’s outdoor gallery at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and Surfacedesign’s 75th Anniversary Plaza for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The large format accommodates 750 plans, renderings and photographs, mostly in color. VERDICT A fine showcase for outstanding work in this field, though some panoramic renderings could have been larger. Environmental consciousness often extends to landscape design, and this collection will stimulate those readers as well as landscape professionals and students.–David R.
